Two main things that increase longevity and decrease mortality
⠀⠀⠀⠀
Being lean and being strong
⠀⠀⠀⠀
Multiple studies show that the most effective way to achieve that is through resistance training.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
I often get asked the question “what about other sports?”
⠀⠀⠀⠀
Swimming, boxing, running, martial arts, hiking, basketball are all great things to do.⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀
And you should definitely keep them up.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
But they don’t achieve the same effect as resistance training does over longer periods of time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can see on the chart below that the main difference between a man who gets weaker and a man who gets stronger as he ages, is resistance training.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s because resistance training is by far the most effective way to reverse Sarcopenia which is nothing else than muscle loss.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every year you lose 1-2% of muscle mass, it’s part of evolution.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a side effect of that, your metabolism slows down, your body get softer, you’re more likely to get sick, you’re weaker when you fall and you have more pain in your body.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As much as you might love swimming, running or being active there’s no way around resistance training if you want to decrease mortality rate and increase longevity.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you are in your 40’s and 50’s you got a whole other life ahead of you by taking good care of yourself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
And lifting heavy is part of that with a big ROI.
